Some days are better than others

Or “Деякі дні кращі за інші”, as it might have been sung, if U2 had been from Ukraine and not Ireland. The picture for todays post is from one of my writing sessions. I have a program on the computer (Anki) that shows me a word in English, and then I try to write it in Ukrainian.

Here’s the thing. Some days, it just doesn’t work. Some days, it feels like I can’t get a single word correct, including words I had gotten right before. Then it is easy to give up. I have many strengths, but learning languages isn’t one of them.

And it’s then, that a word that I had problems with before, suddenly just falls into place. Or that I think back on words I thought that I’d never learn, but that I now know. That gives the energy and encouragement to keep on going.

Here’s the thing. There is no secret. There is no trick. There is dedication. If you take your time, and put in the energy, you will learn. Some days will be better, other days will not. That’s the name of the game, but as someone said “90% of success is showing up”. Keep showing up. Keep practicing, keep listening, keep talking. And it will come.
