Many European languages have, if not the same, at least similar names for the months. And even I as a Swede must admit that our names don’t really makes sense. For instance, even though the months september to december means 7,8,9 and 10, but they are actually the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th month of the year. While there is historical reasons for that, it should have been possible to fix by now. And, I must admit.. most of the other months I have no idea why they are called what they are called.
If we look at the Ukrainian months, however, it is a bit different. From what I understood, all the months have names that actually reflect the time of the year in one way or another. So, I thought I’d present each month, one by one. As a year long project.
September – вересень (veresen)
September in Ukrainian is вересень. This makes a lot of sense when you learn that the word for heather, the plant, is верес (veres). In other word, September is the month of heather.
I like that!
