Last week we listened to Okean Elzy, and this week it’s time for another iconic Ukrainian band: Skryabin (Скрябін). When I have talked with Ukrainians about music, this is a name that often is mentioned, and when I read up on them, I found that they have been a cornerstone of the Ukrainian music scene for a long time. Led by the charismatic frontman Kuzma Skryabin, the band’s music ranges from synthpop to alternative rock, often touching on social themes and human emotions.
From what I’ve discovered, Skryabin’s sound has evolved over the years. Early tracks like “Танец Пингвина” have a more flamboyant, humorous side, while songs like “Люди як кораблі” demonstrate a deeper, more reflective tone. As with all bands, I found it interesting to listen to songs from different periods, seeing how they have evolved.
Since I’m still exploring Ukrainian music, Skryabin has been an interesting discovery. I was particularly struck by their song “Люди як кораблі.” The metaphor of people as ships navigating life’s rough waters resonates deeply, and it’s a song I find myself returning to. If you’re also discovering Ukrainian music, Skryabin is a band that offers both fun and depth.
