Independence day/ День Незалежності України

Sundays on this blog are meant to focus on reflection of what the week has given in regards to learning Ukrainian or things about Ukraine. And, this weeks biggest event must be said to be the celebration of Ukraines independence day yesterday. I do have lots of impressions from the evening, but will try to sum it up in bullet form

  • I did my best to practice my Ukrainian. In all honesty, it could have gone better.
  • It is a big difference between learning individual words, to learn from writing and reading, and to actually speak and listening to the language in a social situation. Put me in front of a computer, I think I could solve a couple of hundred words. Those words were completely gone yesterday.
  • I had the chance to meet friends from both Sweden and Ukraine. And Latvia. Some of which I haven’t seen in a while. That was fun.
  • I learned that the song “War” isn’t written by Bruce Springsteen. I still think his version is quite good though. Admittedly this isn’t that related to Ukraine. But still
  • I did, however, got to know and listen to, for me, new and interesting Ukrainian artists. Will get back to those in a later blog post.
  • I was honored by a very nice gift, that meant a lot to me on a personal level.
  • Ukrainian food is very nice!
  • I got to wear my vyshyvanka, which is a traditional Ukrainian shirt. Got lots of compliments for it.
  • I got to play chervona kalyna on guitar. Or at least do my best to accompany when it was sung.
  • Overall, the evening was very nice, and it motivated me even more to challenge myself when it comes to learning Ukrainian.
